THE
HONEST MEN TRUST
Trust
Members Back Committee Structure
The
Honest Men Trust held a Members Forum Meeting last Wednesday
the 4th May at the Hospitality Suite at Somerset Park. Secretary,
Neil Bone talked about the rise and fall of the Ayr 2010 joint
bid with the Roy Kennedy consortium and the formation of the
Commitees covering various areas of Ayr United for example Lottery,
Stadium, Merchandising and Match Day. A show of hands was taken
with a unanimous vote that the committee structure was supported
by the Trust members. There were also discussions around the
Trusts support of the Clubs Shirt Sponsorship plan and members
had a chance to put their views across. The Trust will be sending
out a Newsletter to all members shortly to advise of the meetings
main points. Thank you to all who came along and give some good
ideas and showed their support.
Trust
Meet With United Owner
After
the collapse of the 2010 joint bid with Roy Kennedy's consortium
the Honest Men Trust Board were invited by Donald Cameron to
meet with him and the United Board at the end of last week.
The Board of Ayr United indicated that the Club needs a strong
Honest Men Trust and most importantly need all of the fans rallying
behind the Club at this time. The Trust have been asked to help
coordinate, together with the Club, the setting up of committees
covering each arm of Ayr United, these including the likes of
Stadium Development and Safety, Match Day Operations, Hospitality
and Finance. The Trust have been ensured that each area will
work to a Business Plan and targets, with an overall Strategic
Business Plan being delivered within the next few months. The
Honest Men Trust will be arranging a meeting with all of their
members as well as an Open Fans Forum soon to give full details
to everyone. This is time for everyone to get behind their team
with the United Board showing their commitment to give the fans
a voice and help make real decisions to ensure United progress
to where we all wish them to be. Further information will be
provided on the fans forums shortly.
Stewart
Clark Is Our Dream Team Winner !
Despite
the Club’s fortunes being at their lowest ebb for some
time, the idea of selecting an Ayr United Dream Team appealed
to almost 100 fans. The final selection of players from World
War II to the present day presented the Panel with some very
real dilemmas. Was John Murphy a better left-back and No.3 than
Stevie Nicol? Who was our best centre forward and No. 9 - Peter
Price, Alec (Dixie) Ingram or Alan (Rambo) McInally? The
Panel - Duncan Carmichael (club historian), Mike Wilson (Sports
Editor, Ayrshire Post), and John Dalton and Donald McNeill (Honest
Men Trust) finally plumped for this great line-up.
Davy
Stewart, Dick Malone, John Murphy, Rikki Fleming, Ian McAllister,
Stevie Nicoll, John Doyle, Sam McMillan, Peter Price, Robert
Connor, Alec Beattie.
Not
surprisingly, many are from the Ally MacLeod era - our favourite
manager - who masterminded the most successful spell in the
club’s history in the 1960/70s. The
greatest ever game was also closely argued with Cup victories
over rivals Kilmarnock and semi-final and our one final jousts
being prominent. The vote eventually went to the record attendance
clash with Rangers in September 1969 when Ayr triumphed 2-1.
The crowd that day of 25.225 will never bee seen again.
Donald
McNeill said
“All
the entries had both thought and imagination and allowed the
fans to nominate their personal favourites. It showed just how
well we have been served by our players over the years. We could
easily have picked two or three teams. We do expect some flak
over our selection but football is all about opinions and views
and controversy. Although things are not going too well just
now, there is no reason why we cannot recapture the glory days.
After all, it was only 3 years ago in 2002 we were taking 12,000
supporters to Hampden to the League Cup Final. It is very fitting
that our winner is Stewart Clark of Ayr, a life-long supporter
steeped in Somerset Park. Stewart and his guest will receive
the full hospitality package at the next derby fixture against
Stranraer on Saturday 23 April. Our congratulations go to Stewart
and grateful thanks to all who entered and our Panel.”
United’s
All Stars and Dream Team Decision Analysis
Since World War II, Ayr United has been well served by its players
and supporters. Although unable to secure any major trophies,
the Club has been blessed over the years with many wonderful
footballers and exciting classic fixtures. When we embarked
on our fun competition we did not realise the difficulties in
selecting one Dream Team. Indeed, there has been enough talent
in the famous black and white to pick two or three teams from
the players that have graced Somerset Park .This is amply illustrated
by both the stalwarts and entertainers we have had to omit Ramsey
Burn, George Burley, Gerry Christie, Jim Cowell, David Craig,
Gordon Cramond, Cammy Duncan, Stevie Evans, Alec and Jackie
Ferguson, Jim Fleeting, Derek Frye, Willie Furphy, Duncan George,
Johnny Graham, Willie Japp, Sam Leckie, Neil McBain, Davy McCulloch,
Tottie McGhee, Alistair and Willie McIntyre, George and Jim
McLean, Brian McLaughlin, Jim McSherry, Eric Morris, Eddie Monan,
Eddie Moore, Malky Morrison, Craig Nelson. Andy Nesbit, Arthur
Paterson. Stan Quinn, Jackie and Malcolm Robertson, Len Round,
Bobby Rough, Malcolm Shotton, John Sludden, Bobby Thomson, John
Traynor, Davie Wells etc. Our regrets to them, the many more
good players we have had and the supporters who nominated them.
